Carrie Stevenson, MSW, RSW
Family & Individual Therapist, Practice Owner

Clients describe me as compassionate, trusted, and insightful.  I provide a non-judgmental space so clients can feel safe to openly share their thoughts, emotions and experiences. I guide clients through personal exploration to help them develop a more holistic understanding of their experiences and themselves.  I will help you learn and apply new skills and strategies that will help guide you to make impactful shifts that lead to meaningful change.

For over 15 years, I've been providing support to individuals and families struggling with mental health concerns and personal challenges - always building a strong therapeutic alliance that nurtures understanding, healing and change.

In my individual therapy work,  I enjoy supporting people through the different transitions of their lives.  With each new transition we’re often asked to re-evaluate who we are, what’s important in our lives, our different identities, and our relationships. Life transitions can include parenting, job change, divorce, loss, pre-natal and post-natal challenges, and mid-life transitions.

In my family therapy practice,  I specialize in supporting family members (parents, partners, siblings) navigating the challenges of having a loved one with complex mental health concerns, which can include emotion dysregulation, Borderline Personality Disorder, PTSD, and trauma.  In these situations, family members greatly benefit from a different set of skills than they might receive through traditional therapy.  Carrie has the experience and expertise to support and coach you on new skills and strategies to address the complexity and patterns that may have been unintentionally created when managing very challenging crises, and extreme behaviour.   We will help take care of you, as you support and care for your loved one.  You don't have to do this alone.

Prior to starting One Degree Therapy, I worked seven years at St. Joseph's Healthcare Hamilton, in an inpatient acute Concurrent Disorders mental health unit and the Youth Wellness Centre, where I was a clinical therapist for young adults with mental health concerns (17-25 years old) and also instrumental in developing a leading family program.   As the Family Educator, I supported families of young adults with mental health concerns, providing education, skills, and individual therapy.

Additionally, I worked at DBT Hamilton supporting family members of loved ones with emotional dysregulation, Borderline Personality Disorder, trauma, and PTSD.   I have experience and training in Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT) and Emotion-Focused Family Therapy (EFFT), as well as extensive training related to supporting parents.  I also lead and facilitate a specialized family skills group for a large number of families in the community for the past eight years.   Through numerous family-based workshops and community speaking engagements I strive to pass on tangible skills and skills to individuals and families in need.
